Neutral Naturals and Gold

By Heather

What do you wear when the temps are going into the mid 90s and your husband says, "Let's get lunch and a glass of wine at Zinc Bistro at Kierland Commons." He escalates the offer by saying that I could browse the shops as we walk to the restaurant (he had me at lunch and  a glass of wine). To make the day even more delightful, we're being joined by an old family friend from Minneapolis, Dr. Streu, who spends the winters in the Valley of the Sun. Dick Streu was Tom's dad's best friend and the Streu family and the Glaeser family spent a lot of time together as the kids grew up. He's the most spry 83-year-old I've ever known, a great conversationalist, and very generous: he treated us to lunch!

A little shopping at Z Gallerie before lunch. Kish linen pants and sweater from the Everything But Water store at Kierland (this store is more boutique-like than their other stores)
I like wearing natural fibers when it's summer (yeah, I know it's technically still spring but tell that to the Scottsdale weather gods) and when you're my age (over 60) and my shape (curvy with wobbly parts), it's best to cover up a cami with a loosely-woven sweater that allows air to flow but covers the arms. I know it looks a little shapeless (when you're short and curvy, you're supposed to wear closer-fitting clothes that show some shape) but sometimes I just don't want to follow the fashion rules; I'd rather be comfortable. With age comes freedom!
Coach purse; Vaneli cork wedges from Marmi
Tiffany sunglasses; Michael Kors watch; pave link bracelet, small gold necklace from Nordstrom's; longer gold necklace from Macy's; Alexis Bittar bangles; macrame bracelet with metal discs from Everything But Water.

Tom, in his standard summer uniform of polo shirt and khaki shorts, sitting down for lunch with dear family friend, Dr. Richard Streu. How come Dick has more brown in his hair than Tom does?? But isn't my husband handsome with all of that white hair?

Local store, Oils and Olives, at Kierland Commons
Bought the best Maytag blue cheese stuffed olives, a loaf of crusty country bread, carmelized red onion and fig tapenade, and garlic parmesan crema here for a tasty respite later in the day along with a bottle of wine.

Across Scottsdale Road from Kierland Commons is another shopping mecca called Scottsdale Quarter. I always make sure to stop in at Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware when I'm there. These pictures are from Pottery Barn. Loved their latest vignettes featuring some of their summer items.
 My favorite tablescape.
Is is time to decorate for summer? I'm getting in the mood!

Have a wonderful week!
Love,
Heather

  1. I adore that first picture...the textures around you perfectly complement your gorgeous outfit!

Shopping, food, and wine sounds like my idea of heaven. Your husband obviously knows the way to a woman's heart. I hope that you had a great time together.

There is a store in Scottsdale called Bungalow that I am dying to visit. I follow the posts on their blog and drool all over my computer. Have you been? Is it as pretty in person as it looks in their blog?

    1. Hi Diane,
Thanks for the sweet comments. Yes, I've been to Bungalow and it's as beautiful, if not more so, than the pictures you've been seeing. Your comment, though, reminds me I haven't stopped in recently so I better stop by this week. The store isn't too far from my home and directly across from the Costco where I gas up once a week. Come in to town and we'll shop together!

  3. Oh, you're wearing my favorite color and fabric! I LOVE linen! Such a great fabric for summer.
I'll be visiting Scottsdale in July. Hubby has a conference to attend and I'll be tagging along. I'm assuming it will be incredibly HOT? It's a good thing I have lots of linen pieces. :)

    1. Hi Jeannie,
Yes, it will be incredibly hot -- think about 110 or more. If you're lucky, it will only be about 105 or so. Lightweight natural fibers are the way to go! If you'd like, shoot us an email and we'll meet up with you :)

  4. You look very elegant in the heat! Love all the nuetral colours together and the mix of fabric texture. Great accessories too! Know what you mean about fashion rules. Rules schmules, if you're comfortable go with the flow.

    1. Thanks, Patti. My husband still thinks his hair is brown. He's very surprised when told that it's not and he's been white/silver since his 30s! The DMV finally made him change his hair color on his driver's license.

  11. Your outfit isn't baggy. Your clothes skim the body, and the top is airy enough that there is no bulk to worry about. Your instincts were just right ... one short girl to another!
    Looking pretty for your date!

  12. Summer may be coming to Scottsdale, but here in southern California it is foggy, foggy, foggy AND cold along the coast.

I had to laugh about the over 60 and wobbly parts. I too am over 60 and I refuse to follow any fashion rules. I teach middle school so today it was jeans and converse Jack Purcell. Who says I have to dress my age?

    1. We're leading a similar life, Carol. I'm a teacher also (high school) and I also function as the preschool director of our on-site early learning center. Jeans are a staple in my work wardrobe because of my connection with the preschoolers :)

  14. You make a gorgeous couple!! How wonderful to spend time with a family friend, too. i think you look utterly cool and glamorous for that weather. I'll be taking notes, since warm weather dressing is always a challenge for me.

  15. Thank you, Jean. I can't imagine that warm weather dressing is a challenge for you. You always look so beautifully put together! I prefer layers, though, so sometimes it's a challenge for me!

    1. Thank you, Reshama. I'm still giggling over the fact that when I wrote the post, it was still technically winter and there I was thinking that it was a spring day that felt like summer. It's easy to get confused here when the weather is almost always sunny and warm!

  17. What a brilliant way to spend the day. I found the 'fashion rules' comment interested as tomorrow I'm posting an outfit pic similar (in that I'm wearing floaty pants and top). As a short lady myself I was surprised at how flattering the outfit and sometime gambling the style rules can be! Not to mention comfort is always king - thanks for linking up with WW xo
