Fashion Rules (that I Make)

by Heather

I believe that ensembles should match. Call me crazy.  I know the matchy-matchy look is not the fashionable thing nowadays but I have to admit that I'm at my most content when things match. For those of you in my age range, you'll remember Doris Day's matching coats and dresses and then a little later, That Girl (Marlo Thomas) with her complete coordinating outfits down to the hats, shoes and purses. I loved those outfits.
I had the yellow and tan hat (Loft) from last year in my closet; the sweater (J Crew) was a new addition this year.
Linen pants are from Chico's; cami from WHBM.

Do you get that warm, happy feeling when you discover that a new purchase matches something that's already in the closet?  I recently bought a yellow and tan sweater and found that I had the perfect matching hat already. Finding items that match is bound to happen sooner or later since my purchases are usually from the same color palette, but it's always a pleasant surprise. This summer my color choices have definitely been navy, yellow, and mint (and orange). Last summer I was into brown and turquoise (and orange).
Steve Madden sunglasses (Nordstrom's)
Early in the spring I told myself that my clothing rule for the spring/summer season was to buy only navy and white items (this was after buying that wonderful Michael Kors navy and white striped purse), but that was before I saw the mint...and the yellow...and of, course, more orange.  I was hoping that by limiting my colors, I would buy fewer items. Riiiight.
Loft hat (last year)
Juicy Couture bracelet, Michael Kors watch
Brina Box necklace
Do you make rules for yourself when it comes to buying clothing and accessories?

One of my rules last year was to only buy clothing that I would wear when rolling down the road in our RV (we don't have one yet; it's about three years away but I thought I would get ready). I made a fabulous Michael Kors long nubby knit cardigan purchase that will be perfect for continuous travel...but I discarded the "rule" when I discovered linen blazers on sale at Nordstrom's (which are probably not an optimum choice for RV'ing).

One of my current rules is to only buy items that will suit my retired life style (but then how did the darling new navy and white polka dot dress end up in my closet? Oh yeah, it fits the navy and white rule).
Marc Fisher wedges, Michael Kors purse (both old)
Libby has rules but she doesn't follow them either.
I had a boss once who called me a renegade (I'm pretty sure he didn't mean it as a compliment).
Am I still a renegade when I'm breaking my own rules?

Have a wonderful week breaking any and all fashion rules!

Love,
Heather

  2. haha I think I relate a little too well with your rule setting and breaking tendencies. Too funny that Liberty is having the same issues.
Yes, it's a great thrill to discover that "match"! Like an archeologist putting together pieces to an ancient tribe ....digging around in my closet and discovering new outfits. Or something like that. :D

I'm very asymmetrical in my taste; no matching lamps for me! But there is a comfort in having things match, and sometimes, I JUST GOTTA DO IT! xoxo

    1. Thanks, Paula. I'm with you on the matching lamps (although I just remembered that I do have a pair in the bedroom but they're on different bedside tables). I have a friend who is totally asymmetrical in her taste, too, but all of the colors she uses coordinate. I can live with that :)

  9. I agree with you that things should match. If not match, then all pieces should "play well together". Love yellow on you!

  10. You are totally awesome! I love the matchy matchy look! Between the hat and the necklace I am loving this whole look. Plus the zibra print on your rug and pillows are awesome! I hope when I am your age (40 something, right?) I am as awesome as you!

  12. You are too cute. Rules are made to be broken, or maybe flexed, especially when they are our own! Limitations are a pain in the arse. Stay to the Matchy course if that is what makes you shine so brilliantly, I hereby grant you permission! Lol

  13. All I can say is - I want your closet! You have coordinating accessories in every shade of the rainbow and I enjoy seeing what you come up with each week. I try to make some rules too (no more stripes, polka dots or pencil skirts) but then I see a new combo and the rules are broken. I would say we should just call them guidelines :)

    1. Alice, I definitely like calling them "guidelines" instead of rules! I should also add the guideline of no more stripes; my closet has been overrun with stripes. But then I see something new and that guideline goes right out the window :)

  20. Naaah. You have too much pure, laboratory-grade style to worry about matchiness. That's a rule designed to be broken, fast and often.
I know what you mean about seeing that perfect color match in the store: "Eureka!" I'm envious that you wear yellow so beautifully ... it's a tough color. You look fresh and pretty.
I never use a card of any kind, even my debit, to buy clothing. Only cash. That's how I keep the spending under a dull roar and have for years. My rules tend to be more about that than the kind of things I buy.

  24. Fashion rules that we make ourselves are the best kind. I want to figure out how to make a necklace like that out of simple materials/every day materials. Do you think I can? Have you seen my post today? well, please do. I am going to be doing tutorials on accessories each week now. Yay! Oh and your bowzer looks so happy. awh!

  25. I am loving the sunny yellow! Such a happy look, and the color looks great on you! Fashion rules are meant to be broken :) I set some for myself as well, but my main rule is to wear what I want and what makes me the most comfortable! I never break that rule ;) Thanks for sharing this look with Three-fer Thursday!

  26. Oh Heather, thank you! Depending on where you live Savers or Value Village are one in the same thing. I love Savers because it is always clean and VERY ORGANIZED. If you just want say a black T shirt, you directly to the T shirt row, find your size, and then the black section. Voila! Easy as pie. We have a Salvation Army store near here too and it is mess, dirty and cluttered and thing all over the place! And I refuse to bin dive! If there are bins in a Thrift store, I turn around and walk out! Snobby me and my thrifty deals, love, Renae LOL

    1. Renae, just had to let you know that I Googled Savers and found that there's one nearby. It got rave reviews for being very clean and organized as well as for having some high-end merchandise -- it's in North Scottsdale, after all :) I'm going to check it out this weekend. I also have some items to donate so it sounds like a good deal for everyone! Thanks for introducing me to a new store!
